The Evzoni are selected soldiers of the Greek army, more commonly known as tsoliades. Their costume was officially established by King Otto of Greece, which he also wore to official appearances. Through the historical action of the Evzoni battalions, the Evzoni have been reduced to symbols of bravery for the Greek people. Nowadays, the soldiers of the Presidential Guard are called “Evzoni”, who perform symbolic missions, with the central guarding of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Palace. Evzonas Pocket Square
The Evzonas Silk Pocket Square pays tribute to the storied attire of the Presidential Guard of Greece, known as the Evzoni. More than a design, it is a proud homage to a timeless symbol of national pride and bravery.
Iconic Elements of the Evzonas Attire:
- The Fario (Cap): Red felt headwear with the Greek coat of arms and a long black silk tassel, believed to represent the tear of Christ at the Crucifixion.
- The Fermeli (Vest): Intricately constructed with white and gold-plated embroidery, showcasing symbols of Christian and Orthodox heritage.
- The Tsarouchia (Shoes): Heavy red leather shoes, each with around 60 nails in the sole, producing a powerful sound with every step. Their black tassels historically held practical and protective functions.
Ceremonial Role Today
Modern Evzoni no longer fight in battle but perform ritual duties. Their most iconic role is the symbolic guarding of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square, Athens. They also escort the Holy Light each year from Jerusalem to Greece, a role considered a high honor.
Evzoni also represent Greece abroad—marching in New York’s 5th Avenue during Greek Independence Day, and participating in historical commemorations such as the anniversary of Messolonghi and the liberation of Ioannina.
